Cowboys sign veteran backup QB

The Dallas Cowboys announced on Friday that they signed a backup quarterback Cooper Rush to a new two-year deal.

According to Ian Rapoport, Rush will be paid $6 million over the next two years.

Rush played a huge part in the Cowboys being able to sustain their season after starter Dak Prescott was hurt in the opening game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While Prescott was out for six weeks, Rush lead the Cowboys to a 4-1 record. Many had thought at the time as in seasons past that the Cowboys would fold without Prescott, but Rush proved them wrong.

Rush passed for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also completed 58 percent of his passes.

He may not have put up Dak Prescott-like numbers, but he didn’t need to.  The Cowboys’ offense relied heavily on their running game and defense to carry the load during Prescott’s injury.

All Rush was asked to do was not to turn the ball over and guide this offense until Prescott returned.  Some fans even argued that maybe the team should replace Prescott with Rush when Prescott would struggle in games.

Obviously, that didn’t happen, but the Cowboys did at least make sure that Rush wouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
