Last week, team owner Jerry Jones announced that the Dallas Cowboys would not be parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy despite another lackluster performance in the playoffs. But it doesn’t like they’ll be giving him a contract extension, either.

In a pretty brutal and harsh decision from Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones, NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that Mike McCarthy is not expected to receive a contract extension despite entering the last season of his contract with the team.

“Ever since Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced this week that McCarthy would return in 2024, there have been questions about whether McCarthy’s contract could be adjusted in some way — even something as simple as having one more year tacked on,” Schefter wrote for ESPN.

“The answer, simply enough, is no. Jones said he believes that a person in the last year of a contract is challenged in a different way, and it often can bring out the best in people — which he is banking on happening in 2024 with McCarthy.”

Obviously, this is a pretty brutal decision that will put a lot of pressure on McCarthy heading into next season, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media as a result.

We’ll have to see how McCarthy responds to the pressure.
