Overall the past several weeks, it had become pretty clear that the Arizona Cardinals were ready to trade star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins during the offseason. But as it turns out, that might not be the case, after all.

During a press conference this week, new Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was asked about the status of DeAndre Hopkins. And he had quite a surprising response, revealing that he’s working under the assumption that Hopkins will be on the team going forward.

“I’m operating that he’s a Cardinal right now,” Gannon said according to the NFL official website. “So, I’m looking forward to getting in the meeting room and on the field with him and seeing where it can go. I just know he’s an elite player. Being a defensive guy, I had to go up against him a couple times in the division. The challenges that he presents. I’m excited to get to work with him.”

Of course, there’s still a chance this could change. After all, there is still a long way before the start of the upcoming NFL season. Still, it’s quite a development to hear Gannon now talking as if Hopkins will continue to be a part of the team, especially after he was non-commital just a few weeks ago.
