While Frank Reich was the first head coach to be hired during the current cycle, it certainly seems like San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is in line to be the second. The big question is, which of his multiple suitors will make him the offer that he might take?
According to both Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Ryans is currently the top choice for the Houston Texans.
“He’s expected to meet with Houston at some point next week after the game,” said Rapoport. “There is mutual interest and if all goes well, he could be their next head coach.”

The Texans will have to compete with the Denver Broncos according to recent reports as they’re said to be very interested in Ryans as well. With their interest in Sean Payton cooling, it appears that they might want to focus on getting a defensive-minded coach at the helm.
It would be fantastic news for DeMeco regardless of where he ends up as the NFL is desperately in need of more Black head coaches after the latest round of firings, including the Texans’ own decision to fire Lovie Smith.
The NFL world certainly had some reactions to the news that Ryans could find himself in a bidding war between the Texans and Broncos.
COME ON HOME MECO!! 🤘 https://t.co/xKLd9FXddh

DeMeco Ryans is in demand, and has positioned himself to pick his spots—made a lot of money as a player, took care of that money, has been judicious about finding the right HC job.
Broncos and Texans both like him a lot. And so he has options. https://t.co/oxerFEFgqX
