The Denver Broncos certainly didn’t envision a 5-12, last-place finish in the AFC West when they traded for new franchise quarterback Russell Wilson.

But that’s exactly what happened.

The Broncos hired former Super Bowl champion Sean Payton to replace the fired Nathaniel Hackett as head coach. While the results of that hire remain to be seen, Wilson’s former Broncos teammate, free agent running back Melvin Gordon, recently revealed why Wilson struggled last season and why he’s poised for a major bounce-back this season.

“The situation wasn’t — it wasn’t good,” Gordon said during an appearance on The Jim Rome Show. “It wasn’t good. But like I said, I think they’ve got the pieces there now that’s gonna put him in the best situation. What he do this year? It’s on him, but I definitely believe they’ll be a better football team than they were last year.”

Gordon went on to call Payton an “MVP coach.”

Gordon played two and a half seasons with the Broncos before the team cut him in November of their tumultuous season. The rival Kansas City Chiefs picked up Gordon on their way to their most recent Super Bowl win.

Gordon is currently a free agent looking for “the right situation.” The former Wisconsin standout has logged 6,462 yards over eight seasons in the NFL.
