The Denver Broncos hired former Super Bowl champion head coach Sean Payton to right the ship after a disastrous 2022 campaign that saw them finish 5-12 and last place in the vaunted AFC West.
While we still must wait a couple of months to see how the new-look Broncos perform under Payton, he recently earned a rousing endorsement from legendary Broncos quarterback John Elway.
“I am excited. He’s a perfect fit for where we are right now, where the Broncos are right now,” Elway told Lionel Bienvenu of ABC7 Denver during the American Century Championship golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
“Obviously, he has a lot of skins on the wall,” Elway said. “He won a Super Bowl before and won a ton of football games. I don’t think there could have been a better fit. I think he will be great.”
Still, Elway cautioned that the Broncos might need a couple of games to adjust to the new regime before things truly take off.
“It’s going to take some time with a new system, new coaches, even though the spring was very good,” Elway noted. “The expectations are up there. But they have calmed the expectations compared to last year, which is good. We have to do better with injuries. Hopefully we can stay healthy.”
If the Broncos made the right hire with Payton, and the team can stay healthy, then they’ll certainly do better than last year’s disaster of a season.
