As NFL teams across the country make roster moves to trim their rosters below the league’s 53-man limit before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline, it looks like the Detroit Lions are parting ways with former first-round pick Jarrad Davis.

According to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Lions are releasing the former first-round pick in a move he called “a bit of a surprise.”

Davis was selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 21 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft and played four seasons with the team before Detroit declined his fifth-year option. Following his stint with the Lions, Davis signed with the New York Jets on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million ahead of the 2021 season. After his lone season with the Jets, Davis rejoined the Lions in March but was apparently unable to make the team’s final roster during preseason camp.

In his five-year NFL career, Davis has appeared in 64 games, 50 of which he has started. In those 64 game appearances, Davis has 305 total tackles, 10.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles and an interception.

While Davis will not be playing for the Lions this season, it’s like the veteran linebacker does find an NFL home before the start of the 2022-23 season.
