Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts will look to bring home the organization’s second Super Bowl championship in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs. Ahead of the matchup, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman discussed Hurts’ journey to becoming the team’s franchise quarterback, including how he overtook Carson Wentz for the starting position.

Hurts was famously drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft to provide a reliable backup behind Wentz. Things ultimately didn’t work out for Wentz, imploding in the 2020 season and subsequently being benched in favor of Hurts.

Roseman detailed how depth is extremely important at the quarterback position, and that Wentz simply couldn’t handle the competition at his position.

“At the end of the day, it’s the most important position in sports. You see it through the course of this season,” said Roseman via The Philadelphia Inquirer. “You need depth in this league. Why wouldn’t you consider building depth at the most important position of all sports?

“The league is a competitive league.  Look, you have to be really good to start in this league. If you’re worried that we’re bringing in depth and talent, you’re probably not the right guy at that position,” Roseman added referring to Wentz.

Wentz has not experience much success since leaving Philadelphia, and he unfortunately may be undergoing a similar situation in Washington next season.

Despite starting seven game last season for the Washington Commanders, head coach Ron Rivera detailed on Wednesday that rookie quarterback Sam Howell will “more than likely” be the starting quarterback heading into the offseason.

This could mark the end of Carson Wentz as a starting quarterback, which would certainly make his career disappointing given his lofty expectations coming into the NFL.
