Earlier this offseason, several NFL players – most of whom played for the Detroit Lions – received suspensions for violating the league’s gambling policy. And based on a recent report from ESPN, it sounds like more suspensions could be on the way.

On Monday morning, David Purdum of ESPN reported that the NFL is currently investigating “a second wave” of possible violations of the gambling policy that could result in even more suspensions throughout the league.

“In the wake of five players being suspended in April, the NFL is investigating a second wave of potential violations of its gambling policy, multiple sources told ESPN. The uptick in gambling-related issues comes five years after a landmark ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court,” Purdum wrote for ESPN on Monday.

So far, several players have been handed suspensions for violating the league’s gambling policy. Former Detroit Lions players Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore as well as former Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were suspended in April for at least one year for allegedly betting on the NFL – the same penalty Calvin Ridley received in 2022 and Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw back in 2019.

Last month, Lions receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams were suspended for six games for allegedly placing bets while at a team facility, even though those bets were not on NFL games.

It will certainly be interesting to see what comes of this new NFL investigation.
