After surprising the football world with a playoff berth and road playoff victory in 2022, the New York Giants entered the 2023 NFL season with high hopes. But the excitement was derailed for Giants fans not even a full half into the team’s first game of the season.

The Dallas Cowboys went into MetLife Stadium and annihilated the Giants 40-0 on Sunday Night Football.

The Giants had the opportunity to score the game’s first points, but Graham Gano’s field-goal attempt was blocked and returned for a touchdown by the Cowboys in the first quarter.

Dallas took a 26-0 lead with over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Gano missed another field goal.

Giants fans booed the team as the first half ended.

It was 40-0 early into the fourth quarter.

After one of the seven sacks Dallas had on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, NBC’s Cris Collinsworth said, “I mean, this is awful. I don’t know what else to say.”

Collinsworth later added, “This is wild. I mean, just wild. [The Cowboys] are just destroying the Giants. Destroying them.”

Despite the blowout and taking constant hits in messy weather conditions, Jones played nearly the entire game.

Rich Eisen tweeted, “The Giants have lost their last two games — to the Eagles and Cowboys — by a combined score of 78 to 7.”

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has won his last 11 starts vs the Giants.

The RedditCFB account tweeted, “The Pac-2 should get to combine rosters and replace the Giants in the NFC East. They’d be more competitive.”

Marcus Mosher of Pro Football Focus tweeted, “I know it’s Week 1. But can we finally stop comparing the Giants to the Cowboys and the Eagles?”

“Daniel Jones taking a beating in driving rain while down 40-0 is quite the move by Brian Daboll right now. Absolutely absurdity,” tweeted ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

The Giants travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in Week 2. If that game also goes poorly, the uproar from Giants fans will get much louder. New York opens as a 4.5-point road favorite.
