The New York Giants expected to play this season with Daniel Jones as the team’s starter and Tyrod Taylor as the backup, but after Jones suffered a neck injury in the team’s 31-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins, that plan changed a little bit. And it sounds like the Giants are now adding a veteran quarterback to help bolster the position for the remainder of the season.

This past Sunday, the Giants lost Taylor for the foreseeable future after he suffered an injury to his ribs, and has since been kept at a local hospital for additional screening. In the meantime, the Giants added Tommy DeVito to their active roster on Tuesday, but the team was afraid to let him throw the ball, as he filled in for an injured Taylor in New York’s 13-10 loss to the Jets on Sunday.

DeVito scored his first career touchdown but was just 2-of-7 passing and netted negative yardage.

On Tuesday, the New York Giants announced the addition of veteran Matt Barkley to their practice squad. Barkley had previously worked out for the Giants, in addition to Ian Book last week, but did not sign a deal, as the Giants looked to protect themselves if Jones was out in the long term.

While Jones is now cleared for contact, Taylor is the quarterback who will be sidelined moving forward; sparking the need for Barkley.

Barkley is quite a journeyman quarterback. He was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and has since spent time with the Cardinals, Bears, 49ers, Bengals, Bills, Titans, Panthers, and Falcons. Though, he has only played with the Bears, Eagles, and Bills.

The 33-year-old quarterback’s most recent start came on Nov. 11, 2018, when he led Buffalo to a victory over the Jets at MetLife Stadium. He last appeared in an NFL game on Jan. 3, 2021. Last year, he spent the entire season on the Bills’ practice squad. He was released by Buffalo on Sept. 1 and has since found a new landing spot on the Giants’ practice squad.
