punt

By the time a punter makes it to the NFL, it’s pretty fair to expect that the whole punting process would be nearly automatic for a player, from catching the ball in the backfield, to dropping it onto the foot, to booting it downfield. But apparently, that wasn’t the case for New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan during Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

During the second quarter of Sunday’s game, Jamie Gillian took a snap on a punt attempt and everything appeared normal at first. But when the punter tried to drop the ball to his foot, something went terribly wrong. Instead of dropping the ball right to his foot, the ball bounced off the ground. As a result, the punter had to kick the ball on a bounce, and wasn’t able to kick the ball nearly as far downfield.

It was an extremely awkward play for the four-year NFL veteran punter, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Twitter as a result.

The Giants were flagged for an illegal punt as a result of the disastrous play. With the team already down 14-0 to the Eagles at this point, this certainly didn’t help them climb out of the hole.
