Indianapolis Colts head coach Jeff Saturday Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday watches the action on the field Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, during a game against the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Jeff Saturday will no longer be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts if thousands of the franchise’s fans get their way.

Colts owner Jim Irsay made and defended the controversial hire of Saturday, who had no coaching experience beyond the high school level. He finished with a 1-7 record as the Colts finished third place in the AFC South Division.

Now, Colts fans are circulating a petition in favor of ending the Saturday era immediately and with prejudice.

“Mr. Irsay,” the petition begins by addressing the Colts owner.

“We as Colts fans will always love the memories of the Super Bowl XLI team; we love the former players and the people they’ve become, but we don’t want Jeff Saturday as the head coach of this team going forward.

“Please hire someone with experience and save your fan base from revolting and losing interest.”

Over 2,550 self-described Colts fan signed the petition in under 24 hours. Change.com notes that if the petition reaches 5,000 names, it’s “more likely to be covered by local news.”

Former Cleveland Browns legend Joe Thomas destroyed the hire when it happened in November.

“When you hire your drinking buddy to be the head coach of an NFL football team, it is one of the most disrespectful things I’ve ever seen in my entire life — to the commitment, the lifestyle, and the experience that it takes to be an NFL coach, or any coach, much less the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts,” Thomas said on Good Morning Football.

Only time will tell if the Colts end the Saturday era.
