The Washington Commanders are suddenly in need of some help at the quarterback position after starter Carson Wentz suffered a finger injury that will keep him on the sideline for several weeks. While veteran quarterback Taylor Heinicke is expected to serve as the team’s starter with Wentz sidelined, the team still needs some depth, and they’re addressing that concern by bringing in former Georgia Bulldogs star quarterback Jake Fromm.

According to Washington Commanders beat writer John Keim of ESPN’s NFL Nation, the team is expected to sign Jake Fromm to its practice squad following Wentz’s injury.

Fromm is in his third season in the NFL after he was selected by the New York Giants in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Before joining the Giants, Fromm was a star at Georgia from 2017-2019, throwing for 8,224 yards and 78 touchdowns while also completing 63% of his passes, leading the Bulldogs to the 2017 College Football Playoff Championship game.

The NFL world had plenty to say about the move on Twitter.

While Fromm is not expected to be the team’s starter at any point, he does have experience as an NFL starter. Fromm started two games for the New York Giants in 2021 when starting quarterback Daniel Jones was sidelined with an injury. However, Fromm was limited in those games, throwing for only 210 yards and three interceptions along with one touchdown, losing both games.
