Jerry Jones could not have been happy Sunday after his Dallas Cowboys almost lost, at home, to the team with the NFL’s worst record, the Houston Texans.

The Cowboys were 17.5 favorites over their in-state rivals, yet had to rally from 23-17 down in the fourth quarter to escape with a 27-23 victory.

The Cowboys coaching staff will break down everything that went wrong, but Jones had his own bizarre off-the-cuff remark to explain the Texans‘ near upset.

“Those quarterbacks looked like Brett Favre. Both of them,” Jones said (via Jon Machota of The Athletic).

We can only assume Jones meant the Hall of Fame QB Favre, not the one mired in scandals in his home state of Mississippi. And state officials had more bad news for Favre recently as they seek to recoup welfare funds he used to help build a volleyball facility at his alma mater.

Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel split time under center against the Cowboys. Mills had 175 yards passing and Driskel added 38 yards and a touchdown. It’s a good bet neither of them has ever been compared to a Hall of Fame quarterback before, so that’s a plus for the 1-11-1 Texans.

Or maybe the Cowboys just came out flat and uninspired against the huge underdogs. Still, the Cowboys are now 10-3, the first time they’ve posted double-digit wins in consecutive seasons since 1996.

Machota reported that Jones claimed, “he’s not disappointed with the way the Cowboys played today. He’s elated that they got the win.”

Hey, when you go up against a pair of Brett Favres and still win, that’s worth celebrating.
