The New York Jets cut quarterback Chris Streveler on Monday, ending the former preseason hero’s short-term run with the team.

ESPN NFL reporter Rich Cimini, who covers the Jets, reported the news that the Jets waived the backup quarterback.

“The Jets have waived QB Chris Streveler,” Cimini posted. “The 2022 preseason hero injured his throwing thumb on a helmet last Thursday night and hasn’t been able to practice. It’s a tough business.”

As Cimini pointed out, Streveler gained fame and attention in New York in the preseason. He led New York to two comeback victories in Week 1 and then Week 3 of the 2022 NFL preseason. Later on that season, with Streveler still on the roster, the Jet quarterback gained the affection of Jet fans. They poured out for him and chanted his name to replace the despaired Zach Wilson, whose struggles drew the ire of Gang Green fans. Streveler was the right man at the right time. But now, his time in New York is up.

A native of Naperville, Illinois, Streveler attended Minnesota and South Dakota for college before going undrafted in 2018. He played two seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL. The Grey Cup Champion joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 and has spent time with the Ravens, Dolphins, and of course, the Jets since then.
