The Zach Wilson era may be over for the New York Jets.
Trevor Siemian is set to start Sunday’s season finale against the New England Patriots, as Wilson remains in concussion protocol for the third straight game.
Wilson, who the Jets selected second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and have already benched multiple times since then, does not seem to factor into the team’s 2024 plans.
“We’ll see,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said, via ESPN “It’s all things that we’re going to have talk about once the season’s over, but whether it’s here or somewhere else, I believe he’s going to have a hell of a career.”
The Jets had originally planned for Aaron Rodgers to be more of a mentor to Wilson, who would sit behind the embattled future-hall-of-famer for a couple of seasons before regaining the starting job, but Rodgers’ injury on the first play of the regular season changed things. Wilson was hoisted back into the starting role and struggled to get anything going. Wilson went 4-7 in 11 games as Jets starting quarterback this season and threw just eight touchdowns to seven interceptions. His 77.2 quarterback rating put him third-worst in the league among quarterbacks who started at least ten games, narrowly beating out Patriots quarterback Mac Jones and Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.
Despite how things went, Saleh is rooting for Wilson in whatever comes next. “I thought he battled. He fought. He’s a fighter, he really is. Obviously, there are things that I know he wishes he could have back. I know there are a lot of things that he improved on. Some things were out of his control, but I’ve said it and I’ll say it again: I think he’s going to have a long career.”
