Indianapolis Colts’ new star quarterback Anthony Richardson will miss the rest of his rookie season after suffering a shoulder injury on a play where he was running the ball. But Indianapolis Colts team owner Jim Irsay doesn’t think the injury was a result of Richardson running the ball too much.

Even though Anthony Richardson does run the ball often, Jim Irsay pushes back on the notion that he runs the ball too much, claiming that Richardson protects himself whenever he takes hits in a game.

“He’s not running too much,” Irsay told Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports on Wednesday. “He’s protecting himself. He really is. If you look at the one on the shoulder injury, you can’t believe it happened. It’s just a normal tackle. You know, it’s not even a physical [tackle] like Andrew’s tackle [when he injured his shoulder]. . . . It happens, but it hurts to see his shoulder, the throwing shoulder, at so young.”

Richardson is a playmaker with both his legs and his arm, so it’s important that he does have the freedom to make plays on the ground. But at the same time, it’s clear that he does need to protect himself from injury to be able to stay on the field.
