Team owner Jim Irsay and the Indianapolis Colts got their franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft Thursday, picking Florida’s Anthony Richardson fourth overall.

Irsay’s bizarre tweet Friday afternoon, however, left fans scratching their heads.

The tweet read, “Colts Fans…would you take Will Levis at #2 if you’re on the board for Colts in 4 hours from now??? … and go Montana – Young for Franchise??”

Levis, of course, became one of the biggest stories of the first round. The former Kentucky Wildcats quarterback had been widely viewed as a top-five pick, with one crazy rumor seeing him picked No. 1.

The Colts had been projected as the team most likely to draft Levis, but instead, they chose Richardson. Levis went undrafted Thursday night.

Irsay is surely joking about the Colts double-dipping for quarterbacks, but as he alluded, the 49ers had two Hall of Fame quarterbacks on their roster back in the day, with Joe Montana and Steve Young. So did the Green Bay Packers, for that matter, with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

Irsay has a reputation as one of the most colorful NFL team owners. This is a man who owns a vintage guitar collection worth tens of millions, and he pays a curator to look after it. It would not be beyond Irsay to throw out a crazy tweet just for fun.

Many in the Twitterverse think Irsay’s tweet is a joke. But a surprising number of Colts fans actually want the team to pick Levis in the second round.
