San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has a fascinating situation to deal with at quarterback. The 49ers drafted Trey Lance in 2021 with a Top 5 pick, but Lance missed most of last year due to injury. Brock Purdy stepped in, and the rest is history, as San Francisco drove the bus all the way to the NFC Championship Game. So now, with the 2023 season looming, Lynch will have to balance his view on both Lance and Purdy as the team contemplates what to do with its QB room.
Lynch, though, stopped on SiriusXM Radio to rave about the former North Dakota State star’s off-season. According to 49erswebzone, the Niners’ general manager said, “Really proud of Trey. Trey came back off a broken and dislocated ankle, and he’s out there, has had a really, really quality offseason. So we still remain very high on Trey. We wanted to bring in some more competition. We brought in Sam, and Sam’s really taken to the coaching and the structure that we can give him.”
This aligns with many things that Trey Lance has said and posted himself. The former Top 5 pick mentioned that he finally felt 100 percent three months ago in March. He had been seen working out with elite UCLA recruit Dante Moore and two-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes as well this off-season.
The 49ers’ quarterback situation probably isn’t anywhere close to being resolved. So far, though, John Lynch seems to be pressing all the right buttons and not irritating anybody involved in the process.
