San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch expects quarterback Trey Lance to be in the Bay Area.
A hot-button issue for the team this off-season has been the quarterback position. Jimmy Garoppolo departed for the Las Vegas Raiders, Brock Purdy underwent medical procedures for his UCL injury, and Trey Lance rehabbed a significant injury. Lynch spoke to the media on Monday during the Niners’ pre-NFL Draft press conference about him and other topics as well.
Lance has been rumored to be a potential trade target for other quarterback-needy teams. Lynch sounded off on those rumors and seemed to suggest that he would be elsewhere to rest for now.
Aaron Wilson tweeted, “#49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters during draft press conference he expects quarterback Trey Lance, the subject of trade rumors, to be on the roster this season, characterizing it as ‘a lot of smoke, really.'”

The 49ers selected Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. He hasn’t played much due to injury and other circumstances, so the quarterback doesn’t have a lot of tread on his tires. That’s what’s made him seem so sought after, but he is still on the team. Based on how Lynch said it, the team expects him to be around this season. That doesn’t write it off entirely but don’t expect Trey Lance to go anywhere for now.
