As Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson continues to insist that he does not need an agent to negotiate on his behalf electing to represent himself instead, one prominent NFL quarterback provides an excellent example of how an agent can help.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Indianapolis Colts made the decision to part ways with veteran quarterback Matt Ryan after just one season with the team. But as league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network revealed on Tuesday, he’s going to get paid $12 million this season regardless, thanks to a provision negotiated by his agent.

“As part of the #Colts trade to acquire QB Matt Ryan, his agent negotiated a new contract that included a $12M guarantee in 2023 that was not in his previous contract. Ryan remains entitled to the $12M regardless of what he decides to do this season. Amazing.”

It’s an absolutely brilliant move from Matt Ryan and his agent, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.

It’s not often that someone is able to make $12 million a year while doing absolutely nothing at all, but that’s exactly what Ryan will have the opportunity to do this year thanks to the rare contract provision.
