With how prominent and important passing offenses have become in the NFL over the past several years, it would be safe to expect that the top-performing quarterback with the most passing yards in the league would regularly lead his team to Super Bowl victories. But that hasn’t been the case. In fact, until Sunday night, it had never happened in the entire history of the NFL.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes led his Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, and with that victory he made some absolutely shocking NFL history becoming the first player in the history of the league to win the Super Bowl after leading the NFL in passing yardage during the regular season, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

It’s an absolutely shocking stat, given how reliant the league has become on passing, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.

Patrick Mahomes also became the first quarterback in more than two decades to win the Super Bowl MVP after previously being named the league’s MVP following the regular season. It’s safe to say that Mahomes is no stranger to making NFL history.
