It doesn’t take much to spark speculation at the Senior Bowl as NFL player personnel and NFL hopefuls cross paths.

So when a star quarterback says he’s met “a few times” with the New England Patriots, rumors will fly.

South Carolina Gamecocks star Spencer Rattler said Wednesday he’d met with the Patriots.

“I’ve spoken with them a few times, along with other teams,” Rattler said. “All the teams are out here and it’s cool to be able to talk to them and get to know them.”

That’s all it took to get X (formerly Twitter) humming, sending Rattler’s name viral.

The Patriots are widely expected to bring in a new quarterback this offseason. The team owns the No. 3 overall draft pick, and several mock drafts have them picking LSU QB Jayden Daniels, who won the Heisman Trophy.

But stranger things have happened, and the team could opt to draft another position there, and go with Rattler, who is projected to go in the third round. (They picked a pretty good starting QB in the sixth round back in the day, guy named Tom Brady.)

Rattler is playing for the American team in the Senior Bowl, which is Feb. 3. The American team’s offensive coordinator is former Patriots star Troy Brown, now the team’s WR coach, so Rattler is getting a look at the Pats’ offense.

“It’s been cool, getting to run their offense, learn what they’re doing,” Rattler said. “It’s been really fun. He’s been in the league a long time, knows a lot about the game, just being around him … it’s been a blessing.”

Of course, Brown would have some insight into Rattler’s strengths and weaknesses he could share with the Pats after coaching him at the Senior Bowl.

Rattler, who began his college career at Oklahoma, passed for 3,186 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. Various scouting reports like his athleticism, big arm and confidence, but question his decision-making at times.

Still, it’s an interesting scenario to ponder, the Patriots drafting Rattler, and X users pondered the heck out of that possibility.
