A botched pass interference call in the Baltimore Ravens-Cincinnati Bengals game Thursday night left fans livid.

Making matters worse, the play had a huge impact on the game.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Lamar Jackson threw deep to Zay Flowers. Bengals cornerback DJ Turner II appeared to have perfect coverage on the play, but got flagged for interference. The pass also appeared to be uncatchable.

“I don’t see anything,” Amazon Prime analyst Kirk Herbstreit said while reviewing the play. “I don’t know how you call that.”

After the broadcast returned for the second half, Herbstreit reviewed the play once again.

“This is a phantom call,” he said. “I’m not sure how they called that one.”

The 28-yard penalty moved the Ravens within striking distance of a score, and four plays later Jackson hit Rashod Bateman with a touchdown pass to put Baltimore up 21-10 at the half.

Remember when the NFL allowed coaches to challenge pass interference plays? The trial system lasted only one season in 2019, before the league scraped it because the results were too inconsistent. Many more calls like the one Thursday night and fans will be clamoring to make PI reviewable once again.

Many fans were furious about the call.
