Ray Rice

If Ray Rice returns to the NFL, he promises to make a significant contribution towards domestic violence programs.

The former Baltimore Ravens running back spoke to USA Today, where he said the scrutiny he took after TMZ posted a video of him knocking out his partner, was deserved and if he makes an NFL return, he’ll donate his salary to domestic violence programs.

“All the scrutiny that I’ve got, it was deserved, because domestic violence is a horrible thing.”

“Me donating my salary is something that’ll be from the heart for me. I only want to play football so I can end it the right way for my kids and for the people that really believed in me. But I know there’s a lot of people affected by domestic violence, and every dollar helps. It’s raising awareness.

It’s a noble gesture to potentially make, but there are two ways to look at it. It could be Rice is trying to repent for his actions and seriously wants to make a contribution towards domestic violence programs. But, to be cynical, it’s possible Rice is just saying this in an attempt to both help his image and get a chance to revive his currently non-existent NFL career. He himself admitted getting back into the game was going to be a long-shot.

Good for Rice for making the suggestion, but it’s hard to not take his comments with a grain of salt. Hopefully, Rice would be donating for the right reasons, if he ever gets back into the NFL.
