Ron Rivera Commanders Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders have not had reliable quarterback play in quite a long time, but it sounds like head coach Ron Rivera thinks the team has solved that problem by naming Sam Howell the team’s new starting quarterback.

During a recent press conference, head coach Ron Rivera claimed he’s confident “going into this season that we’ve got a guy.”

“I think there’s not that question mark still, you know what I’m saying? For three seasons, I’ve always felt that I had a question mark and now you feel like, ‘Okay, this is pretty good.’ I mean, I’m pretty comfortable, pretty confident and I look forward to seeing it,” Rivera said according to Pro Football Talk. “I really do. I mean, the other night seeing it was, ‘Wow, he did some really nice thing. Let’s keep rolling, let’s keep growing and hopefully it continues.’”

Despite Rivera’s confidence, Sam Howell still is not exactly a proven quarterback, starting just two games last season. But he’ll have a chance to prove himself and live up to Rivera’s hype this upcoming season.

It will certainly be interesting to see how he performs and whether or not he can bring continuity to what has been a revolving door at the quarterback position in Washington.
