New Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales spent a lot of time coaching Russell Wilson over the years, serving as Wilson’s quarterbacks coach for four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. And in a brutal turn of events for Wilson, even he had a pretty harsh assessment of the way Wilson has played the past few years.

During a recent appearance on Up & Adams, Canales shut down any possibility of a reunion between him and Russell Wilson in Carolina and offered a pretty brutal analysis of film from Wilson’s two seasons with the Denver Broncos.

“This is not the situation for Russ,” Canales said.

“What I will say about him is taking that chance and that opportunity to go to Denver, I really admire him for that. I really admire the courage it took to say, ‘I’m gonna branch out away from what I’m comfortable with.’ Certainly guys like me who was with him for all 10 years and the level of comfort that comes — I know exactly what he wants, he needs, what he’s gonna ask for, I can anticipate those things. He really gambled on himself to go and try to do something a different way to see what that can become. What it’s become, hey, the film’s out there but I really credit him for that.”

Obviously, it’s pretty brutal news for Wilson that a coach who spent so much time with him has such a harsh assessment of his game, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.

Canales isn’t saying anything unfair, but they were still some harsh words.
