The Denver Broncos‘ splash free-agent signing of Russell Wilson hit another snag on Tuesday.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that Wilson will undergo an MRI of his hamstring:

“This was the concern pending tests today. Russell Wilson plays through pretty much everything. But his health will be worth monitoring — again — on a short week leading up to Sunday’s game against the #Jets,” Pelissero wrote.

NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport added context to the news, saying Wilson will attempt to play:

“After the MRI, Russell Wilson is considered day-to-day, source said. It’s a real injury, and he’s in real pain. But he is pushing to play. The #Broncos will continue to evaluate his progress on a short week,” Rapoport said.

The NFL world was quick to react to the news:

When Ken Griffey Jr. went to Cincinnati, I told friends at the time I thought Seattle got the best 10 years of his career. I think Seattle also got the best half of Russell Wilson‘s career,” Adam Richter tweeted.

“Russell Wilson needs some cooking lessons big time or the broncos might have to look for a new chef,” said one fan.

“You can’t get out of the Russell Wilson deal until after the 2025 season at the absolute earliest. Earliest. Anyone suggesting otherwise hasn’t looked at these dead cap numbers,” Will Petersen said.

“As some of the reply guys have noted, this apparently means the Broncos weren’t the only people to overestimate Russell Wilson‘s contribution to the game this year. League schedule makers did too,” said Ben Fischer.

“The Broncos had two years to evaluate Russell Wilson. Instead, they gave him a five-year, $245M extension. Until he’s 40 years old. Through the 2027 season. Yikes,” Matt Verderame said.

The Broncos host the New York Jets Sunday.
