The NFL world is buzzing after significant news emerged Friday afternoon. The New Orleans Saints are moving in on their choice to be the team’s next offensive coordinator.
Klint Kubiak has emerged as the frontrunner for the open offensive coordinator job. The Saints saw a vacancy open up after dismissing longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, who’d been with the team since 2009. Now, New Orleans appears to be pivoting towards an assistant from the San Francisco 49ers’ coaching staff. There are worse ideas out there.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news of these developments. He reported the news on X, the popular website formerly known as Twitter.
“Saints are working to hire 49ers’ passing game specialist Klint Kubiak as their offensive coordinator,” Schefter said. “Kubiak would join the Saints after he coaches his final game with the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. No deal can be finalized until after the game.”

After playing football at Colorado State, Kubiak began coaching in 2010. He spent three seasons with the Texas A&M aggies. He then went to the pros, where he worked with the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons before returning to the college ranks. Kubiak joined the Kansas Jayhawks coaching staff as a wide receivers coach.
In 2016, Kubiak returned to the NFL with the Denver Broncos. That was fitting, since the Broncos were coached by his father Gary Kubiak. He held that position from 2016-2018 before he went back to the Vikings. After three seasons with the Vikings and a season again in Denver, he joined the San Francisco 49ers. He’s spent the last season as a passing game specialist, helping Brock Purdy along.
It seems clear that he’ll have his work cut out for him after a disappointing season in New Orleans. But there’s worse ideas than plucking coaches from the 49ers.
