The New Orleans Saints were heading into the 2023 NFL season with three quarterbacks on their depth chart.

Now, they have four.

Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football noted that the Saints have changed the designation of Taysom Hill from tight end to quarterback after being listed as a tight end for all of training camp.

The Saints also have Derek Carr, Jamies Winston, and Jake Haener on their depth chart.

The move makes it seem likely the Saints might want to consider Hill for one of those spots on the depth chart and have him handy on the active roster to take advantage of the emergency quarterback rule.

Per Pro Football Talk, the idea could be that Carr would be QB1 and Hill would be QB2 while either Winston or Haener would take the emergency third quarterback role. That person could only play if Carr and Hill were both unavailable to play because of an injury or ejection.

It also means that Hill would still be available to line up as a tight end as needed. However, the emergency quarterback cannot be used in different positions and scenarios like that.

This might seem like New Orleans is exploring a loophole but, then again, the rule is the rule and they’re just doing what they’re allowed to do until someone changes it.
