Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell took an astounding 40 sacks through the first seven games of the season – well on pace to eclipse the NFL record – but the team has improved in that regard in recent weeks, and Howell explained why.

In the past two weeks, Sam Howell has only been sacking an average of twice per game – a drastic improvement to the nearly six sacks per game previously. And during a press conference this week, he praised his offensive line first and foremost.

“I think obviously it starts with those guys up front,” Howell said according to Adam Schultz of SI.com. “They’re doing a lot better job, and they’re gelling as a unit. They’re doing a really good job as far as picking up blitzes and being on the same page, and the backs are doing a good job as well.”

But Howell also revealed some changes that he has made himself to help correct the issue.

“I think for me, I’ve tried to improve every single week as far as just getting the ball out of my hands and trying to get down to the check-downs faster,” Howell said. “I think I’ve shown improvement in that area every single week. I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job of that right now, and I think I’ve shown that the past two weeks. I just got to try to continue to find ways to improve in that area and make it easier on those guys up front.”

We’ll have to see if the team can keep up this up throughout the remainder of the season.
