Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has had a passion for golf since he was in high school. That passion turned into an extreme hobby on the greens where he finds himself partnering up with the names of Wayne Gretzky.

The two are part of a “Breakfast Club” of celebrity golfers at Gozzer Ranch Club near Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The group also possesses the names of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper, and two-time World Series champion Pat Burrell.

From ESPN’s Seth Wickersham (h/t Golf Digest):

They eat eggs and toast, down coffee and divide into teams for the day, wagering thousands each round in prop bets, and prop bets on prop bets, minutiae only they understand, a band of competitive adrenaline junkies.

Imagine being a fly on the wall.

Payton and The Great One began a friendship that grew close over recent years being neighbors in that Idaho community. Their love for sports history and culture certainly helped.

Their golf game grew increasingly competitive, especially during Payton’s time off from coaching after leaving the New Orleans Saints following the 2021 season.

Payton pays up on those bets, also. Even back in 2018, he made a donation to the Philadelphia Eagles on behalf of former head coach Doug Pederson when he lost in the final round.
