A report of the demise of former Super Bowl champion running back Sony Michel was premature.

On Monday, an account on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, called “BeatinTheBookie,” falsely claimed that Michel had perished in a motorcycle accident in Florida.

“I am hearing that it’s alleged former Georgia Bulldog and two time Super Bowl Champion Sony Michel passed away last night in a motorcycle accident in Lauderdale Lakes,” the false post read. “May he rest in peace.”

That was news to Michel, who, 17 minutes later, dispelled the report of his own death:

“Fake news,” Michel wrote in a post on X.

BeatinTheBookie issued a mea culpa shortly thereafter. “My sources were incorrect I guess,” he wrote. “It was an error to post regardless. Glad to hear he is still with us. Last time I report any news. Sorry guys.”

Michel won two Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams before retiring earlier this year after a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers that ended in December 2022 when the franchise released him after he appeared in 10 games.

Despite the false report, Michel is “alive and well as he continues his life post-football,” according to Lauren Campbell of MassLive.com.
