The Belichick era is over in Foxborough … or is it?
Well, it is in the form of head coach Bill Belichick. The rest of the staffed family could remain with the team.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Belichick’s sons, Steve and Brian, did receive offers to stay on the coaching staff for the 2024 season.
They would be staffed under Jerod Mayo, who is set to be formally announced as the head coach on Wednesday.

“One other thing worth noting is that Belichick’s sons, defensive play-caller and linebackers coach Steve, and safeties coach Brian, have already been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024,” Breer wrote. “Mayo and the elder son (Steve) have grown close as they’ve collaborated to run the Patriots’ defense the past five years.”
Steve’s return could be smart, as he’s worked with Mayo for the past five seasons. Steve called defensive plays for New England over the last five years, and the two became close, so much so that Steve referred to Mayo as a second brother.
“Even back then, 2013, 2014, we just had a connection. We kind of spoke the same language. With that being said, when we game-planned [as coaches] and talked to the players and things like that, it was very natural,” Mayo told ESPN’s Mike Reiss, who confirmed the original report. “I love coaching with Steve.”
Brian was brought on to the team in 2019, where he served as the Patriots’ safeties coach for the last four seasons.
