If you ever want a brutally honest assessment of your current quarterback room, look no further than to ask someone who used to play that same position for your franchise.

And whether the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted to hear it or not, Shaun King, who is now a member of the sports media at large, offered his thoughts on his former team’s quarterback room. According to Joe Bucs Fan, King weighed in on the current Buccaneers’ quarterback competition on a recent episode of his show, VSiN PrimeTime.

That quarterback competition between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask has certainly captivated the attention of those within and outside the organization. And it has less to do with either’s stature and more to do with who they are replacing. King believes that it will be Mayfield who replaces Tom Brady under center and starts for Tampa Bay in Week 1.

King is also of the belief that the former No. 1 overall pick gives the Buccaneers the best chance to win and made that increasingly clear when he took a shot at Trask.

“Kyle Trask stinks… Listen, if Kyle Trask had done anything in practice during his two years backing up Tom Brady, Tampa doesn’t go out and sign Baker Mayfield. He’d have had to have been terrible in practice. Because when you draft a quarterback second round, you want to be right. [General manager] Jason Licht wants that pick to pan out.”

For all intents and purposes, King could be right about Trask. At the same time, the Buccaneers are likely not thrilled that one of their own is taking veiled shots at a player like Trask. Surely Trask isn’t immune from criticism, but it’s a questionable comment to make on the airwaves given your previous ties in the organization. In any event, it remains to be seen how Trask will fare in his third season in the NFL.
