While the Denver Broncos are a proud NFL organization with a long-storied history, they’re still coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history. And yet, Sean Payton, who was recently hired as Denver’s head coach, has not only dominated the headlines, but his name carries enough goodwill that many believe he can turn this thing around.

One of those believers is Denver Broncos legend Terrell Davis — the franchise’s all-time leading rusher. While Davis never played for Payton, he did play under a two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach in Mike Shanahan. So, he knows a good head coach when he sees one.

During an interview with TMZ Sports this week, Davis said he’s already sold on Payton, who won Super Bowl XLIV with the New Orleans Saints. You’re not going to have to convince Davis that Payton was the right hire for a franchise in dire need of some leadership.

“I’m 100% bought in on Sean Payton,” Davis recently told TMZ Sports. “And a lot of reasons is because I felt like bringing in somebody who’s been there, who’s done that, who’s seen what an organization looks like when it’s at its height — that was important. No other coach out there, in my opinion, has the experience like Sean Payton to be able to look at a quarterback, evaluate him, work with him.”

He also lauded Payton’s ability in working with quarterbacks like Trevor Siemian, Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, and, of course, Drew Brees.

“He’s got built-in equity,” Davis said of Payton. I’ve already seen what he can do with quarterbacks which leads me to be very positive in what he can do with Russell Wilson.”

Davis pushed back against the notion that Russell Wilson is a “broken” quarterback. He also feels Payton is the right solution for helping fix a team that went 5-12 in 2022.
