Terry McLaurin illegal formation penalty. Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin shared an interesting story about a penalty he was called for on Sunday night against the Giants.

Sunday night’s game between the New York Giants and Washington Commanders caught a lot of attention for the pass interference that was not called on Washington’s final offensive play. Two plays earlier, though, a penalty was called. And the player it was called on had an interesting story about it when the game ended.

With the Commanders trailing 20-12, Brian Robinson Jr. scored a touchdown with about a minute left in the game. But there was no game-tying two-point conversion attempt as before that happened, the touchdown was nullified due to an illegal procedure penalty, called on wide receiver, Terry McLaurin.

Illegal procedure is usually not a controversial penalty. It’s pre-snap and there are officials whose sole job before the ball is snapped is to look for illegal procedure. It also doesn’t happen very often. This is because receivers will almost always check with the official closest to them to be sure that they’re lined up legally. When an illegal procedure is called, that probably didn’t happen. Only, in this case, it did — at least according to McLaurin.

After the game, McLaurin shared (per John Keim, ESPN) that he — as receivers usually do — checked with the official to be sure that he was lined up legally.

“Terry McLaurin said he asked the official if he was lined up ok,” Keim tweeted. “Said the official told him to move up. So he did. Looked at the official; McLaurin said he told him he was good.”

This game’s finish was already controversial enough. This revelation made things even worse for football fans.

Rich Ohrnberger: “This is malpractice, and there will be video of this communication… easy to prove. Yikes.”

Dave Ross: “Ouch. @NFLOfficiating”

Matthew Berry: “Unbelievable”

Scott Smith: “Sketchy as it gets”
