The Houston Texans made a big move on Wednesday to acquire four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs. Most would assume that this means Diggs could be in the team’s long-term plans. But it now appears that this may not be the case.
Houston sent over a 2025 second-round pick in return for Diggs, a 2024 sixth-round pick, and a 2025 fifth-round pick. In the short term, it’s certainly a move that improves their offense in a pretty massive way.
But as a long-term move, it could end up being a bit of a mistake. Especially because the team included an interesting incentive to Diggs upon trading for him.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, The Texans included an incentive in the trade for Diggs which wipes out the final three years of his contract. This means that Diggs will now become a free agent after the upcoming 2024-25 season.

For some, it may seem like a bit of a peculiar move for the Texans to do. They clearly wanted Diggs, so most would assume that having him under contract for three more years would be a positive and not a negative for the team.
However, they can always renegotiate a contract with Diggs next offseason if things go well. There is obviously no guarantee that Diggs will be a good fit on this team. And it presents the team with a bit of a preview of what he can do in Houston this coming season without committing to him long-term.
Only time will tell whether this ends up being a positive move for the Texans. But if things go south for Diggs this coming season, the Texans organization will certainly be glad that they did this.
