The Dallas Cowboys have made sure they don’t have to worry about cornerback Trevon Diggs heading into the 2023 NFL season, and beyond.

Diggs and the Cowboys announced Tuesday that they had agreed to a five-year, $97 million extension. The deal reportedly includes a $21.25 million signing bonus and could net the cornerback up to $104 million with incentives.

NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero broke the news on Tuesday.

Diggs was entering the final year of the rookie contract he signed after being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He had been making $4.3 million in base salary per that deal.

Now, the 24-year-old is the fifth highest-paid cornerback in the NFL based on a per-year average. He’s now tied with Marson Lattimore and trails just Jaire Alexander, Denzel Ward, Jalen Ramsey, and Marlon Humphrey.

In his career so far, Diggs has 17 interceptions, two of which he’s returned for touchdowns. He also has 49 passes defended and 169 tackles across 45 games. An All-Pro in 2021, Diggs became the first NFL player with over 10 interceptions in a season since Everson Walls did it in 1981.

The NFL world had some strong reactions to the news of his signing. Cowboys fans were especially excited to know their shutdown corner would be staying put for the foreseeable future.
