Trey Lance is hoping for a fresh start now that he’s been traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys.

That fresh start came with a literal change on Wednesday when it was revealed he’ll don a new number in Dallas.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance struggled to ever cement his hold on the starting quarterback role in San Francisco. Wearing No. 5, he was relegated to the bench and passed by “Mr. Irrelevent” draft pick Brock Purdy for the starting gig.

Now that he’s in Dallas where he’ll back up Dak Prescott, Lance is changing his number to No. 15. He debuted his new jersey on Wednesday on social media.

It sounds like Lance is thrilled for the opportunity to get a fresh start after the disappointment of how things went with the 49ers.

“I really tried to not expect anything one way or another, but I can say that when I heard ‘Cowboys,’ I had a big smile on my face,” Lance told ESPN’s Todd Archer. “I was very excited to be here.”

The Cowboys hope that they won’t have to rely on Lance and that Prescott stays healthy. But if that doesn’t happen, it seems like the young signal-caller is ready to step up once more and prove he still belongs.
