Ever since quarterback Joe Burrow went down with a calf injury in training camp, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has tried to temper expectations.

Taylor mostly told reporters that the “several weeks” timeline for Burrow’s return remains intact but hasn’t added much detail beyond that.

That changed a bit on Monday when Taylor said that while the original timeline for Burrow’s recovery remains in place, the coach thinks that his quarterback is looking about as good as he’s ever looked, if not better.

“He looks great. Physically just walking around, he looks probably as good as he’s ever looked at this point,” Taylor said.

As for what that means, exactly, Taylor isn’t saying. Is he talking about Burrow’s arm? Running? Face? Perhaps all of the above?

Whatever it means, it sounds like the Bengals coach is pretty happy with the progress and that’s a good sign for fans. If Burrow looks better than he did the season he took Cincy to the Super Bowl, he might be in line for a very special season.

Taylor also added that it will take “one rep” for Burrow to be ready to go, so clearly he has all the confidence in the world that his quarterback will be there for Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season.

Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan also had some high praise for the way Burrow looks in his recovery.

“To my eyes, he looks like he is progressing the way he’s supposed to,” Callahan said according to Russ Heltman of Sports Illustrated. “I don’t see him a lot doing things. I probably see him as much as you guys do. So I don’t go watch his rehab or anything like that, but I feel good about everything I’ve heard and seen so far.”
