Fighting in hockey can be a polarizing topic but for veteran defenseman and NHL All-Star game MVP John Scott, it’s a huge part of how he has stuck around the game for so long. Every NHL team needs an enforcer and Scott is just that.

Fighting on a pair of skates certainly isn’t your average brawl, however. There’s an art to it and there are certainly do’s and don’ts as well.

One intrepid AP reporter decided the best way to understand the ways of the hockey fight was by getting into one with Scott himself. Well, sorta.

Scott made more headlines this season than during the entirety of his career thanks to fans who thought they were being funny, an NHL All-Star vote gone awry and an even worse decision by the NHL to not allow him to play after a trade and demotion to the AHL.

It all worked out in the end though, as the NHL’s PR black eye made them do the right thing and allow Scott to play in the All-Star game. All he did was lead his side to a 1-0 win by brawling his way around the ice, even getting into a fight with Patrick Kane in the process. His entertaining night earned him the MVP honor as well.

Yes, even the All-Star game isn’t immune from a “fight” or two. However, those are trained professionals. Us wimpy reporters should never try to get into fight with said trained professionals.
