The San Jose Sharks have been known for brutal losses. But nobody could have predicted the historic and epic collapse the NHL team turned in on Friday night.

The Sharks outdid themselves against the Carolina Hurricanes, as they somehow suffering defeat after they potted an empty-net goal. The historic collapse unearthed a wild statistic from ESPN Stats & Info.

It read, “The San Jose Sharks scored an empty net goal to go up 4-2 with 1:52 tonight- and lost. They’re the third team to score an empty net goal in the last two minutes of regulation and lose the game. The others: the 2019-20 Sharks and 1969-70 Red Wings.”

So not only did the Sharks commit this sin on Friday night… they had already done it before! That sums up a lot about the Sharks, and their Twitter account magnified that too.

They tweeted, “We normally have something positive or some kind of clever tweet after a tough loss. Sometimes just ‘final’ does the trick. But not tonight.”

The Sharks then flatly said, “We lost 5-4. It sucked. Good night.”

San Jose has mired in its own futility this season. The team ranks second-to-last in the NHL Pacific Division, only ahead of the Anaheim Ducks. They are 23 points off the leading Los Angeles Kings.

Their futility, at times, is something else. This one was for the books though. The NHL world reacted to the shocking loss.
