When prominent alumni return to watch their former school player in big-time sporting events, they’re usually met with applause. But that was not the case when United States vice president Kamala Harris attended her alma mater’s March Madness showdown on Thursday.
When the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks took on the No. 16 seed Howard Bison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, Kamala Harris was in attendance. But it’s safe to say she did not get a warm welcome from the crowd.
As the Associated Press reports, the Vice President was loudly booed when she was introduced to the arena and shown on the video board.
“When Harris was shown on the video board during the game, the boos — Kansas and Iowa are Republican-leaning states, after all — outweighed the applause,” Dave Campbell of the Associated
A video showing Harris’ appearance at the game has surfaced online. However, the boos are not audible in the clip.

As the Associated Press points out, this isn’t exactly shocking. Given Kansas’ status as the top seed in the bracket and that the game was played in Iowa, she likely did not have all that many supporters in the crowd.
But that didn’t stop her from supporting her alma mater.
