After appearing on CNN Monday night trying to defend his stance on white nationalists, Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville took back his words on the issue Tuesday.

Tuberville has said as recently as Monday that white nationalists aren’t racist, which infuriated not only people on the left but people in his own party who wanted him to denounce his choice of words.

“First of all, I’m totally against any type of racist,” Tuberville stated Monday night, while also referring to white nationalists as “Americans.”

The former Auburn head coach then added that he has worked with many people of color during his 40-year coaching career.

“My opinion of a white nationalist — if somebody wants to call them a white nationalist — to me, is an American. It’s an American,” he said. “Now, if that white nationalist is a racist, I’m totally against anything that they want to do because I am 110% against racism.”

Tuberville seems to think all of this is just identity politics. At least that’s what he said Monday night to Kaitlin Collins, who was trying to point out to Tuberville that white nationalists are indeed racist.

A day later as controversy swirled around his framing, the Alabama Senator released a short statement to say “White nationalists are racists,” per CNN correspondent Manu Raju.

It will be interesting to see if Tuberville actually stands by this latest statement in the future, or if he continues down this dark road.
