Denny Hamlin got his 50th NASCAR victory at Pocono on Sunday, but it wasn’t without controversy. Hamlin bumped Kyle Larson out of the lead to win the race, which did not sit well with Larson or some NASCAR fans who booed him after the incident.
But that didn’t seem to bother Hamlin who reflected on his victory Sunday and his milestone. Hamlin offered no apology for what he did, a brutal move against the fellow NASCAR star.
“When you retire, and you got a bunch of time, you’re sitting there on your rocker on your back porch, you’re thinking about, ‘What have I accomplished in the sport?’” Hamlin said. “These things take a long time to sit in. They really do.”
Despite all his wins, Hamlin has yet to win a Cup Series championship, but he is in the running this year which can only add to his legacy.
“I never thought I’d get an opportunity in the Cup Series,” Hamlin said. “Luckily J.D. Gibbs took a chance and Joe Gibbs took a chance on me nearly 20 years ago. To get my 50th win, it comes down to the track that I got my first, it certainly is special.”
Kyle Larson isn’t exactly happy with how Hamlin achieved that victory, but Hamlin offered no apologies for how he won.
“We waited. We pounced at the right time,” Hamlin said. “He didn’t get his right sides clean, drove in the corner just too far, let us get beside him. I thought we were going to race it out off of two. He got in the fence.”
Sounds like Hamlin has no regrets about how he got his 50th Cup Series victory.
