Rory McIlroy PGA Tour golfer Rory McIlroy answers questions from the media during the FedEx St. Jude Championship pro-am at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn., on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.

Rory McIlroy has established himself as one of the top names in the sport of golf, but it looks like he’s taking on a new challenge as a partial owner of the Alpine Formula 1 team.

On Tuesday morning, it was revealed that several professional athletes had joined Otro Capital’s $218 million investment into the Alpine F1 team, and golf superstar Rory McIlroy was among that group. He joins Kansas City Chiefs superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, boxing star Anthony Joshua, soccer stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Juan Mata, and tennis superstar Alexander Zverev.

And it sounds like McIlroy is quite excited for the opportunity.

“Passion for excellence on the golf course has led me to admire the same pursuit in Formula 1. Partnering with Otro Capital in Alpine F1 is an exhilarating venture that unites my love for sports, competition, and the relentless drive to be the best,” McIlroy said in a statement about the announcement according to The Athletic.

It’s a pretty noteworthy move from McIlroy to move into one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and people had a lot to say about the announcement on social media.
