Following Tuesday’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Portugal, United States Women’s National Team legend Carli Lloyd absolutely blasted the squad for the way they carried themselves after the game when they celebrated on the field despite a poor showing. And she’s now defending those comments.
During an appearance on Fox Sports on Wednesday morning, Carli Lloyd clarified her comments a little bit, explaining that she only criticizes the team that way because she cares so deeply about it.
“I want people to understand that I care deeply about this team,” Lloyd said. “I poured my heart and soul into this team for 17 years, and it was based off a legacy that was just passed down from generation to generation. The mentality. The DNA of what makes that team so great.”

“So, my comments were reflective of me wanting to see that legacy continued to be passed down from generation to generation. And with that, it comes with hard work, it comes with focus. So, my hope is that continues because that’s what makes the U.S. so special and so deadly.”
Lloyd’s explanation quickly went viral on social media as people gave their reactions to her words.
Not a single thing wrong @CarliLloyd. You gave your opinion because that’s the JOB…few understand that. It doesn’t matter if you disagree or not, good on you for speaking what you thought in the moment. #USWNT https://t.co/UufWmaFpCt

It is absolutely ludicrous that she has to clarify her statement. There was nothing wrong with the comment she made, they are not holding the legacy period.

Please keep speaking the truth Carli! Women's soccer desperately needs it.

No need to clarify, Carli.

The fact she had to comment on this is dumb. https://t.co/X5u5iiKiAL

I have no idea why she felt the need to explain herself. She said what the team leaders should have been saying. The number 1 team in the Cup and they BARELY made the knockout round! https://t.co/EOoPtZDxT4

It’s clear that Lloyd isn’t sorry for her words, and she’s going to keep giving her honest analysis.
