Throughout her career with the United States Women’s National Team, superstar Megan Rapinoe has not been shy about expressing her opinions and criticisms of her home country, even going as far as to kneel during the national anthem back in 2016. But she recently made it clear that she still loves America.

During a recent interview with The Atlantic, Megan Rapinoe was asked what she will miss most now that she is retired from the United States Women’s National Team, and she made it clear that she will miss representing America and that she loves her country – just in a different way than people might want her to.

“I’ll miss being able to represent our country,” Rapinoe said. “I think, a lot of times, that gets lost, when people talk about me in particular: Oh, you guys don’t sing the anthem, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You don’t love America. But we do love America. It’s just more in a James Baldwin kind of way, not in a bald-eagle-on-your-shoulder kind of way.”

Rapinoe has always made it clear that her love for her country is reflected in how she continually fights to improve it and make it better – not just blindly overlooking its flaws.
